With Memorial Day weekend at hand, Maine's parks are gearing up for a busy camping season.
The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands says it has taken 500 more reservations at the 12 state-run campgrounds than at this time a year ago.
Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan says the bureau expects plenty of visitors as Mainers take advantage of the 47 state parks and historic sites that are short drives from most of the state's population centers.

10 Great Gadgets for Camping
There's nothing like the great outdoors: the sights, the sounds, the sense of freedom. One can't help feeling one with Mother Earth. For the ultimate survivalists, enduring the elements is a piece of cake: They welcome the idea of roughing it under the stars, armed with little but a knife and a can of beans.
Not everyone is blessed with this kind of courage and natural instinct, of course. But that doesn't mean you should shy away from the wilderness. Camping can be a pleasurable experience—as long as you're equipped with the right tools.
Whether you're planning a camping trip to the Adirondacks or Anacapa Island this summer, here's a list of 10 gadgets every type of camper shouldn't leave home without.

Hiking and camping safety tips
If you have any medical conditions, discuss your plans with your health care provider and get approval before departing.
Review the equipment, supplies and skills that you’ll need. Consider what emergencies could arise and how you would deal with those situations. What if you got lost, or were unexpectedly confronted by an animal? What if someone became ill or injured? What kind of weather might you encounter? Add to your hiking checklist the supplies you would need to deal with these situations.
Make sure you have the skills you need for your camping or hiking adventure. You may need to know how to read a compass, erect a temporary shelter or give first aid. Practice your skills in advance.
